Growing vanilla takes time and patience—which is why it’s one of the most expensive spices, second only to saffron.

🌿 Vanilla plants take 2-3 years to mature before they start flowering.
🌸 Each flower must be hand-pollinated in most regions, as its natural pollinators are rare outside of Mexico.
🕰 Once pollinated, vanilla pods take 8-9 months to fully mature.
🔨 Processing is labour-intensive—pods must be cured, fermented, and dried before they develop their famous aroma.

With all the time and effort that goes into producing vanilla, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most valuable crops in the world.

Growing vanilla isn’t too tricky, but there are a few things that can cause problems if you’re not careful.

💧 Watering is key – They need regular water, especially on hot days, but too much can cause root rot.
🌱 Soil matters – Vanilla thrives in rich, well-draining soil. If the soil holds too much water, the roots will rot fast.
🍂 Mulch helps! A thick layer of mulch keeps moisture in without making the soil too wet.
☀️ Sun exposure – Too much direct sun can cause stress, but too little will slow growth.

The biggest issues I’ve had? Too much sun and poor drainage. Get those right, and your vanilla should do well!

Ever seen a tree like this? The Jaboticaba (Plinia cauliflora) is one of the most unusual fruit trees around. Instead of growing fruit on branches like most trees, it produces clusters of deep purple fruit straight from the trunk!

🌳 Why Jaboticaba is So Unique:
