How to PLANT and GROW Your Own VANILLA Plant

Aussie Roots February 16, 2024 9:30 pm

Welcome back to my garden, where today it's all about the power of perennials! These are the veggies that come back year after year, creating a sustainable and resilient garden that just keeps on giving. In this short, I'm diving into why perennials are such a game-changer. They save time and effort since you don't need to replant them every year, they're tough enough to handle Queensland's challenging weather, and they're great for the soil. Plus, they provide food over a long period, unlike annuals that need replanting each season. Today's star? The Jerusalem artichoke. Just look at those stunning flowers! But it's not just about looks – these guys are super easy to grow. They love our Queensland soil and climate and aren't picky about their spot in the garden. Join me as I show you these beauties in action!

Perennial Power: Sustainable Gardening with Jerusalem Artichokes

Aussie Roots February 12, 2024 2:00 am

Hey gardeners! Just checking in on my asparagus patch. They're not quite ready for harvest yet, but we're getting close. Growing asparagus is a bit of a waiting game, but trust me, it's worth it. Plant them once, and you've got a producer for up to 20 years – talk about great value! I've paired them with strawberries, started from slips, which are super easy to propagate. These two make excellent garden companions. The strawberries act as a natural mulch, keeping the soil cool and moist, just how asparagus loves it. In this short, I'll show you how they're doing together. We're looking for asparagus spears about the size of your little finger for the perfect harvest. Stay tuned to see how this tasty duo turns out!

Asparagus & Strawberries: A Perfect Garden Match

Aussie Roots February 10, 2024 2:00 am

This is my super easy and simple way of growing lettuce seeds in raised veggie beds! My raised beds are filled with a mix of compost, horse manure, weeds, cardboard - pretty much anything I can get my hands on. Grow arrowroot for an abundant source of free green mulch! Then, I add a nice layer of potting mix, rough it up a little, and sprinkle those seeds!
I love White Boston lettuce, it grows like a champ in hot Queensland.

Quick & Easy: Growing White Boston Lettuce in Raised Beds

Aussie Roots February 9, 2024 9:30 pm

Welcome back to Aussie Roots! In today's episode, we're exploring the fascinating world of Jerusalem Artichokes, also known as sunchokes. These plants are full of surprises – they're not from Jerusalem, nor are they artichokes! Originating from North America, their name is a quirky result of language mix-up, from 'girasole' to 'Jerusalem'.

As members of the sunflower family, Jerusalem Artichokes boast stunning yellow flowers and are incredibly hardy, thriving even in Queensland's diverse climate. But there's more to them than just beauty. Growing up to 3 metres tall, they serve as a natural windbreak in the garden, offering protection to other plants.

In this video, I'll take you through my journey of growing Jerusalem Artichokes in light, well-draining soil. They're not demanding plants – a bit of sunlight, good mulching, and regular watering are all they need to flourish.

Join me as we uncover the joys of growing, cooking, and enjoying Jerusalem Artichokes – a true gem in the garden. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more gardening adventures. Happy gardening, and see you in the next video!

6 Delicious, Fast-Growing Fruit Trees for the Tropics

Aussie Roots February 5, 2024 9:30 pm

Hey everyone! Welcome back. Today's video is all about some awesome veggies that keep on giving, year after year. I'm showing you around my garden to check out three of my top picks: Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus, and sweet potatoes.

First up, Jerusalem artichokes. These guys are tough and easy to grow. Plus, they're super tasty and good for you. I'll show you how they're doing in my garden and give you some tips on growing them yourself.

Next, we're talking about asparagus. This one takes a bit of patience, but trust me, it's worth it. I'll walk you through how to get these guys thriving so you can enjoy fresh asparagus from your own garden - there's nothing like it!

Last but not least, sweet potatoes. I'll show you how I have them growing in my garden - they've gone crazy after the rain. And a cool fact – you can eat their leaves too!

Perennial veggies are great for anyone who wants to grow their own food!

So, let's get to it! And don't forget to like, subscribe, and drop a comment about your favourite perennial veggies. Happy gardening, everyone!

3 Perennial Vegetables That Grow Back Year After Year!

Aussie Roots February 3, 2024 10:00 pm

Hey there, welcome back to my channel. Today, I'll show you what you can do with just grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and horse manure!

Starting off, we dive into my compost pile. I've got a cool trick for collecting leaves and grass clippings - just pop a catcher on the back of the lawnmower! This method lets me gather a perfect mix of brown leaves and green grass, ideal for a rich compost. I'll show you how I leave this blend to work its magic, turning it once a week until it's garden-ready.

Next up, we're off to my work-in-progress: one of my raised garden bed. I try to fill my raised beds as cheaply as possible, using stuff I have around the place. You can see how it's already starting to break down into beautiful soil.

I top it off with a thin layer of potting mix. Yes, potting mix isn't free, but it's a game-changer for moisture retention and seed sprouting. Just a one-inch layer can make all the difference for those little seeds to thrive.

So, grab your gardening gloves and join me! Don't forget to hit that like button if you enjoyed this video and subscribe for more gardening stories!
