These are saffron bulbs (Crocus sativus) – the bulbs that produce the flowers used to harvest real saffron.
If you plant them soon, ideally in January or February, and give them good soil and drainage, the bulbs should flower in autumn. Each flower produces the distinctive orangey-red stigma, which is carefully dried and used as saffron. It doesn’t take many flowers to understand why saffron is so valued.
The bulbs are grown in fresh soil each year, with no pesticides used. They are lifted and graded by size in December, based on their weight at harvest. Larger bulbs generally have more stored energy and are more likely to flower in their first season.
