Atherton raspberry is one of Australia’s native raspberry species and is widely considered one of the best-tasting. It’s a vigorous plant that grows well in subtropical and tropical climates, where traditional European raspberries often struggle.
You can expect heavy crops once plants are established, and it’s not unusual to harvest several kilos of fruit from a single plant in a good season. The berries are large, soft, and slightly fuzzy, with a rich flavour. The plant itself is also attractive, with lush foliage and ornamental fruit, so it works well in both productive and mixed gardens.
This raspberry suits permaculture gardens and food forests, where you want reliable, low-input food production. It’s low maintenance, productive, and tends to fruit twice in a season under good conditions.
